Program Description

Eligibility
- currently enrolled at Fresno State
- completed at least TWO Japanese language courses (or equivalent to Level 4 of the Japanese Proficiency Test)
- gpa of 3.0 or higher
- has intention to return to Fresno State after semester abroad
- will abide by Japanese law and regulations set forth by Tokiwa University and Fresno State

Courses
Tokiwa exchange students can choose from a variety of courses on such subjects as Japanese language and culture in a vibrant academic environment, situated near historic sites, rivers, lake and parks in the city of Mito. Under the student exchange program, the courses listed below will be offered for "transferable credits." It should be noted that one course normally consists of fifteen classes, each of which is a 90-minute period. This should be a total of 22.5 hours of instruction per course.

Each exchange student is required to take (1) basic OR intermediate Japanese language, according to the results of the Japanese Placement Test, and (2) four of the Japanese Affairs and Culture courses.

Japanese Language
Each Japanese language course (basic or intermediate) offered to exchange students consists of five classes (5 X 90-minutes) per week, and lasts fifteen week, which leads to a total of 112.5 hours of language instruction.

Japanese Affairs and Culture
Students are expected to take four classes, including compulsory "Japanese Affairs I". These courses are taught in English, unless otherwise indicated.

Students can stay in the Tokiwa International Hall (University Residence Hall) during the Fall semester.
